After an early start we travel to Dover for an early afternoon crossing. We continue our journey in Europe to our overnight hotel in time for a three course dinner. Following a good night’s rest, we head on through Germany and into Austria where we check into our hotel for the next five nights.
Sound of Music Tour of the Salzkammergut
Tour the stunning Salzkammergut and visit lovely lake Fuschl and Mondsee, home to the beautiful Baroque twin towered abbey church featured in the wedding scene of “The Sound of Music”.
Visit quaint st. Gilgen, on the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee, birthplace of Mozart’s mother. Join a boat cruise to the famous pilgrimage town of st. Wolfgang.
Enjoy the beauty of Lake traunsee, said to be the deepest and most picturesque in Austria. An unforgettable experience awaits you with a sound of Music Dinner show this evening.
Sound of Music City Tour of Salzburg
The hills around Salzburg are alive with the sound of music! Let “The Sound of Music City Tour” show you the historic sights, as well as some of the film locations.
See Leopoldskron Palace, Frohnburg Hallstatt Palace, the impressive Mirabell Palace Gardens and much more. Look out for the trick fountains in the gardens of the 17th Century Baroque Hellbrunn Palace. There will be some free time to explore this great city at your own pace.
Berchtesgaden, Lake König and Hohenwerfen Fortress
Visit the picturesque Bavarian market town of Berchtesgaden and the nearby lake könig, or King’s Lake. Surrounded by majestic mountain scenery, this lake is famous for the clarity of its grand echo which reverberates up to seven times. Take a stroll along the St. Bartholomä Peninsula, with the unmistakable red onion domes atop the ancient pilgrimage church.
Continue to the Hohenwerfen Fortress where the unforgettable movie “Where Eagles Dare” was filmed. Perched on a high rock above the Salzach Valley, this magnificent castle has amazing views and also offers a fascinating insight int medieval life. The castle is also home to Austria’s first Falconry Museum. Learn about these elegant birds of prey and see how they soar and glide on the wing.
Bad Ischl and Hallstatt
In the late 1800’s the spa town of Bad ischl rose to fame when Emperor Franz Josef established his summer residence here. Visit the “kaiservilla”, the former imperial residence, where the Emperor signed the declaration of war on Serbia, which started World War I.
Wander the streets of this charming town and admire the Biedermeier style villas. Continue to Hallstatt, one of Austria’s most exquisite villages. Salt has been mined in this area for over 2,500 years and the Hallstatt Salt Mines are the oldest in the world.
We depart our resort this morning and make our way back through Germany and to our overnight hotel, dinner will be served on arrival. After a good night’s rest, we carry on back to the uk, arriving home late evening.
This is a shared departure with our south operation. We will meet our southern travelling companions at Maidstone services.
The 3* Gasthaus Sagwirt, Krispl
Traditional Inn located in the centre of the small village of Gaissau. There is a restaurant and terrace.
The traditionally furnished rooms have en suite facilities, hairdryer and TV. No lift.
