Ludlow and Stokesay Castle

Morning visit to ludlow, a very attractive market town, full of old buildings including an imposing castle, perched high above the River Teme.

Later we visit stokesay Castle, one of the finest and best preserved fortified medieval manor houses in England. Stokesay's magnificent open hearthed Great Hall, completed in 1291, displays a fine timber roof, shuttered gable windows and a precipitous staircase, its treads cut from whole tree-trunks.

Shrewsbury and the British Ironworks

Morning visit to shrewsbury. This splendid medieval town has winding streets with unusual names such as Bear Steps, Wyle Cop and Grope Lane, full of half-timbered buildings. There are over 600 listed buildings, including the castle and abbey.

We enjoy a boat trip on the Severn, aboard the Sabrina, travelling round the horseshoe loop in the river and viewing the attractive waterfront (tea and biscuits included).

In the afternoon we travel to Oswestry and the British ironworks, home to an array of handmade sculptures and exhibits. See the famous National Monument, the knife Angel, made from over 100,000 knives and weapons taken from the UK streets. Also iron galloping horses, the Iron Guardian and Spoon Gorilla! A memorable visit.
