Visits to Ludlow, Oswestry and Shrewsbury
Today we drive down the picturesque wenlock Edge, off the beaten track towards historic Ludlow, with its castle and an endless array of listed buildings. Here we have time to obtain lunch and explore before we make our way back.
Our return takes us through delightful Shropshire countryside to Bridgnorth and the hotel.
Our first visit today is to ‘where Shropshire meets Wales’, the vibrant market town of Oswestry where you can hear Welsh and English voices mingling side by side in the recently voted “coolest place to live in England”.
Today is market day, with both indoor and outdoor markets to browse. In the afternoon its shrewsbury that catches our attention, packed with timber framed black and white buildings, amongst narrow alleyways surrounded by the River Severn.
We visit the impressive Ironbridge Gorge, where the world’s first iron bridge forms the centre of this World Heritage Site. After a break here in Ironbridge village we make our way to blists Hill victorian town.
Buy curious products in the Chemist, Grocers and Drapers; discover what life was like for a housewife in the cottages, enjoy a drink in the New Inn, a portion of delicious fish and chips or a bag of old fashioned sweets.
The recently refurbished Buckatree Hall Hotel is set in scenic woodland at the foot of the Wrekin, in tranquil Shropshire. Originally a hunting lodge, the house was completely rebuilt in the 1920s. All room feature an en-suite bathroom, TV, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. There is a lift.
