We travel into central Newcastle for a memorable three hour boat trip on the Tyne. The ‘Quay to Sea’ cruise takes you under the Millennium Bridge, which opens especially for us and enjoy the panorama of the Tyne Gorge, shipyards, Fish Quay and Tynemouth Castle and Priory.

We travel to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, one of the foremost religious sites in the world, where Saint Aidan established a monastery in 635AD.
We also visit Bamburgh which has an imposing castle and is also known for the exploits of Grace Darling.

In the afternoon, we explore nearby hadrian’s Wall.
Begun in AD122 to stop raids from the Pictish tribes in the north, the wall was the edge of the Roman Empire. Today large sections still remain and we visit Chester’s (English Heritage, admission extra), one of the best preserved forts, with a fine collection of Roman ‘finds’.
