Home pick up. Arrive early evening at our country house hotel near Melton Mowbray.
Rutland and Sir Isaac Newton. We travel to pretty Oakham, county town of Rutland, continuing to Rutland Water, where we enjoy a boat trip. Later we visit Woolsthorpe Manor, birthplace and family home of Sir Isaac Newton, with the orchard housing his famous ‘gravity tree’. In the evening we enjoy a quiz and tasting of local cheeses.
Beautiful Burghley and Stamford. Morning visit to magnificent Burghley, ‘Britain’s Greatest Elizabethan House’ full of treasures and great works of art. Later we visit the stone built town of Stamford. In the evening we bring the game of Cluedo to life, with two teams trying to solve whodunit!
Robin Hood and Pork Pies. We visit Sherwood Forest, stopping at the Visitor Centre, where you can see the Major Oak, one of Britain’s oldest trees. We continue to Nottingham for some free time to explore this historic city. Why not pause at Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem, reputedly England’s oldest inn? In the evening we travel to nearby Melton Mowbray, where we will be able to make (‘raise’) our own pork pies! There is also a talk about this very English delicacy.
Homeward journey. In the morning, we return to Melton Mowbray to collect our pies and visit the excellent market.
Delightful country house hotel, once the home of Colonel Colman, founder of the mustard company and reputedly the inspiration for the board game character. No lift (a few ground floor rooms on request).
